BORKOVIC SAVES HIS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD AFTER THE FIRST RACE IN ZANDVOORT IN TCR EUROPE

The best Serbian race car driver scores 10 new points finishing 5th in the first TCR Europe race in Zandvoort and is still in the lead in overall standings.

The best Serbian race car driver Dusan Borkovic is still in the lead in the overall standings in TCR Europe after the third race of the championship. He finished 5th in the first race on Zandvoort circuit and scored 10 new points. It is a great result considering that all the Hyundai cars are handicapped due to many restrictions after the BOP changed from this weekend on.

Although he finished 5th in qualifying yesterday he started from the second row because his teammate Chris Richard had an engine change and was moved to the back of the grid. It was a hectic start and in the first lap Dusan’s teammate Rees Barr, Stefanovski, Abreu damaged their cars and had to retire from the race. Borkovic had a great start and almost got to the second place in the first corner when Josh Files hit him. Dusan managed to secure the 4th place before the safety car came out.

Safety car was out on the track for 10 minutes before the drivers could continue the race with 15 minutes left on the clock. Dusan lost his position to Jap Van Lagen in Audi too easily considering Hyundais are the highest, heaviest and with minimum power on the track.

The rest of the race showed how all the restrictions handicapped Hyundai drivers. Borkovic couldn’t compete with Files and Paulsen behind him, but managed to keep the 5th position.

“I am not happy. I had a great start and could have gotten to the second position but I was hit at the start and I am lucky to have saved the car for the rest of the race. The good thing is that I was the fastest of 7 Hyundais on the track, they couldn’t keep my pace. With this BoP the car is much slower and has less power which was evident. 3cm difference is a lot especially in the corners. I just need to collect points this weekend and hope something will change for better. I want to thank my Target Competition Team and sponsors and all my fans especially from Serbia for their support”, Borković said after the first race.

Borkovic was the fastest Hyundai and scored 10 new points and is still the first in overall standings with 66 points, 8 more than Azcona in the second place.

The next race is on Monday at 14:55 CET, live stream on tcr-series.tv
